The Effects of Stress
We all know that stress is bad for us, but did you know that it can have detrimental effects on your brain?
Chronic stress can change the size, structure and function of the brain as it decreases the synaptic connection between neurons
Chronic stress causes changes to the following regions of the brain:
️Amygdala (brain fear centre)
️Hippocampus (learning, memory, emotion)
Prefrontal Cortex (judgement, concentration, decision making, social interaction)
These are the three different types of stress that we can experience:
Chemical / Nutritional
Emotional / Mental
Biomechanical / Physical
It is important to understand that not all stress is bad. There are times in our lives where the stress response is important and can literally help keep us alive. However, we should have a good balance between our Fight/Flight response and our Rest/Digest response.
